愛媛県のみなさんへ
初めまして！アロ〜ハ！2023年度ハワイサマーインターン生　マーカス・バトゥーンです。
ハワイ大学で日本語及びコンピューターサイエンスを専攻しています。ワイキキのブレーカーズ・ホテ
ルでITとフロントのアルバイトをしています。
趣味は読書、プログラミング、ハイキングをすることです。暇な時には自分の日本語能力試験の勉強
のアプリを作るのが好きです。将来、日本語を勉強中の人と英語を勉強中の人が一緒に言語を勉強
できるゲームのアプリを作りたいです。一番好きな作家は村上春樹です。一番好きなハイキングの
場所は「マウナウィリ・フォールズ」です。滝があるのでハイキングが終わったら、滝から飛んで泳げ
ます。
インターン生としてハワイのローカルの知識を紹介をしたいと思います。例えば、ハワイのオアフ島
の名所のダイヤモンドヘッドは元々の名は「レアヒ」というハワイ語があります。ワイキキから見える
形状はマグロの額に似ているから、額（レア）とマグロ（アヒ）のハワイ語から、「レアヒ」になりました。
愛媛県滞在中に楽しみにしていることは道後温泉に行ったり、しまなみ海道でのサイクリングをした
りすることです。ハワイではよくハイキングをするので、石鎚山に山登りしたいと思っています。

Aloha everyone! I’m one of the 2023 summer interns, Marques Batoon. I’m double majoring in
Computer Science and Japanese at the University of Hawaʻi at Mānoa. I work at The Breakers
Hotel located in Waikiki doing IT and front desk.
My hobbies are reading, programming, and hiking. During my free time I enjoy creating my own
study apps for the JLPT. In the future I’d like to create language-study game apps that
Japanese-learning people and English-learning people can play together. My favorite author is
Haruki Murakami. My favorite hiking trail is Maunawili Falls. There is a waterfall there so you can
jump off of the waterfall and go for a swim after hiking.
As this year’s intern I’d like to introduce Hawaiian local facts. For example, Oahu’s famous
landmark Diamond Head is originally known as Lēʻahi in Hawaiian. From Waikiki, Lēʻahi
appears to look like the forehead of the yellowfish tuna, so the name became Lë'ahi from the
Hawaiian words for forehead (lea) and tuna (ahi).
While I’m in Ehime I look forward to visiting Dōgo Onsen and riding the cycling route at
Shimanami Kaido. In Hawaii I really enjoy hiking so I’d also like to try hiking Mount Ishizuchi.
I look forward to meeting and working with everyone!

メロディ・サイカ・マツモト

愛媛のみなさんへ
アロハ！ はじめまして！2023年ハワイインターン生のメロディ・マツモトと申します。ハワイ大学の4
年生で、日本語とアジア研究を専攻しています。ハワイのホノルルで生まれ育ちましたが、家族が秋
田県に住んでいるため、小さい頃から日本を訪れています。愛媛県国際交流協会の皆さんと一緒に
仕事をすること、そして愛媛の皆さんにお会いすることがとても楽しみです！
私について少し話します。趣味はかぎ針編み、バレットジャーナル、とアニメ鑑賞です。現在、「鬼滅
の刃」の最新シーズンを見ていて、好きなシリーズは「ハイキュー」です。また、言語を学ぶことも好き
です。中国語は10年ほど勉強しており、韓国語も1年ほど勉強しています。
愛媛の皆さんに、ハワイの現地語を紹介したいと思います。ハワイは他のアメリカの州と違い、「ピジ
ン」という言語を使っています。これは、ハワイのプランテーション時代に様々な言語が混ざり合って
できた言語です。カジュアルな言語とよく思われているので「ハワイアン・スラング」とも呼ばれること
があります。ハワイについてあまり知られていないことなので、愛媛の皆さんには楽しい、面白いこと
だと思います。レイの作り方も教えてみたいです。また、ハワイは食べ物もおいしいので、ハワイのお
すすめスポットや、ハワイ料理やローカルフードの人気メニュー、私のおすすめの食べ物を紹介した
いと思います。
愛媛にいる間は、ぜひ道後温泉に行きたいと思っています。私は温泉の大ファンで、日本を訪れたら
少なくとも一度は温泉に行きます。また、最近、日本語の授業で夏目漱石の小説を読み始めたの
で、「坊っちゃん」という小説の舞台が道後温泉なのでぜひ行ってみたいです。愛媛県に行くのは初
めてなので、いろいろなところを探検して、いろいろな食べ物を食べてみたいと思っています。愛媛の
有名なみかんをぜひ食べてみたいです！

Aloha Everyone!
My name is Melody Matsumoto. I am a 4th year student at the University of Hawai’i Manoa
campus. I am majoring in Japanese and Asian Studies. I was born and raised in Honolulu,
Hawaii, but have been visiting Japan all my life because I have family living in Akita prefecture. I
am very excited to work with everyone at the Ehime Prefecture International Center and to meet
everyone in Ehime!
A little bit about myself. My hobbies include crocheting, bullet journaling, and watching anime.I
am currently watching the latest Demon Slayer season and my favorite series is Haikyuu. I also
like learning languages. I have studied Mandarin Chinese for about 10 years and have dabbled
in learning Korean for about a year as well.
As for what I would like to share with the people of Ehime, I would like to introduce the local
language of Hawai’i. Hawai’i is very different from other American states as we use a language
called Pidgin. This is a language created by the mixture of languages during Hawai’i’s plantation
period. It can often be referred to as “Hawaiian Slang” because of its casual nature. I think it is
something that not many people know about Hawai’i and I think it would be fun and interesting
for the people of Ehime to learn about. I am also a pretty crafty person, so I would also like to
teach how to make leis as well. Hawai’i also has amazing food, so I would also like to
recommend places in Hawai’i as well as introducing Hawaiian and local foods that are popular
and my personal favorites.
While I am in Ehime, I would love to visit the Dogo Onsen. I am a huge fan of onsens and go to
one at least once when I visit Japan. I also have recently started reading Natsume Soseki’s
novels for my Japanese classes and the novel “Botchan” happens to take place in Dogo Onsen.
This is my first time in Ehime so I am very excited to explore around and try different foods. I
would love to try Ehime’s famous mandarins (mikan)!
